Most of the historians locate his cradle in Recreo (today Máximo Gómez), others affirm that he came to the world on a farm near the town of San José de los Ramos. The truth is that with just over twenty years he rose up in arms in San José de los Ramos during 1895, waging several combative actions in the northeastern portion of the province of Matanzas. As the Mambisa invasion of Gómez y Maceo joined her with her troops and marched to Batabanó, receiving the order to return to their area of operations.

There are many anecdotes about his reckless value and command ability, which made him a creditor of the rank of Colonel of the Liberation Army, the youngest with that rank throughout the war. After causing significant casualties to the Banagüises mounted guerilla, the perpetrator of crimes and abuses against the peasant population, he fell fighting near the town of San José de los Ramos while trying to rescue the body of his brother Antonino. Its ashes rest in the Macagua Mausoleum. The Arabs have declared him a Distinguished Patriot of the municipality for the fighting that he fought there during the years 1895 and 1896.
