Eusebio Hernández Pérez (Colón, 18 / I / 1853 _ Havana, 23 / XI / 1933)

At only 16 years old, he participated in the Mambí uprising in Jagüey Grande on February 10, 1869. Due to the fierce colonial repression, he returned to his town, where he was arrested and was able to miraculously escape when he was transferred to the place of his execution. He studied General Medicine at the University of Madrid, although in Paris he specialized in Gynecology and Obstetrics. He also took part in the Chiquita War and the 95 War, standing out in the latter as a combatant and doctor. During the First North American Military Intervention, the Cerro Assembly promoted him to General of the Health Corps of the Liberating Army.

He opposed the Platt Amendment and neocolonial politicking, which is why he proposed a government system based on popular power where citizens proposed their candidates from the base. He praised the educational system of Soviet Russia and supported student leader Julio Antonio Mella for University Reform. He was among the founding professors of the José Martí Popular University (1923), while during the day he taught at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Havana for 30 years. He revolutionized birth techniques in Cuba through the use of symphysiotomy, which together with his long history in the professional training of doctors earned him the recognition of Father of Cuban Obstetrics. His last political activity in public occurred on September 29, 1933 when the burial of Mella's ashes. His remains rest since 2011 in the Pantheon of the Veterans of Independence of the Christopher Columbus cemetery. It has been recognized by the Colombians as the Distinguished Patriot of the municipality.
