Flora and fauna of the territory

The sugar development of the 19th century, which took advantage of the fertility and productivity of the clay ferralitic soils, gave rise to a savannah of anthropic origin, that is, human activity caused Columbus to transform from an immense forest with abundant timber and fruit species, in an extensive sugar plantation. It is common to see in the fields, also, planted with meats, grains and vegetables, palm groves and the solitary ceiba. Medicinal and ornamental plants and fruit species are grown in the gardens and patios of the houses.

In the municipality, the population of indigenous mammals is poor, since we have few species of jutías and bats. We have a great variety of birds, mainly in the rural area, as well as insects, reptiles and arachnids. Other species of our fauna are not typical of the country, but have been naturalized for domestic, food and agricultural purposes. Among them we find the dog, the cat, the cow, the bull, the horse, the rabbit and others.
