Mario Muñoz Monroy (Colón, 26 / VII / 1912 _ Santiago de Cuba, 26 / VII / 1953)
In 1942 he graduated as a General Physician, a profession he practiced in terroir with great ethics and humanism, giving free consultations to patients with low economic income. A lover of science and technology, he practiced photography in the studio of his father Marceliano, was a small ship pilot, a Class A radio amateur, filmed silent films and promoted the practice of sports based on his physical and mental health, the confrontation with board games for money and to raise funds for the La Caridad Orphan Girls' Asylum.
He participated in the student struggles against the machadista tyranny and later in the Plan of the Moncada against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. He established friendship with the young lawyer Fidel Castro Ruz, who visited him on several occasions as Mario was a member of the Civil Committee of the Centennial Generation. On July 26, 1953, while he was 41 years old, he participated in the taking of the Saturnino Lora civil hospital in Santiago de Cuba, where he was taken prisoner and murdered inside the Moncada Barracks. His remains are in the Altarpiece of the Moncada Martyrs of the Santa Ifigenia cemetery. It has been recognized by historians as El Médico del Moncada.
