Geographical name of the territory
Municipality of Colón, officially created by Spanish colonialism on January 1, 1879 and ratified in the Political-Administrative Division put into practice in 1976. It began to be called as such in December 1855 according to the Royal Certificate of Captain General José Gutiérrez de La Concha, when it ordered the creation of a new jurisdiction with the segregated territories of the jurisdiction of Cárdenas. This name was suggested by the Cuban sage Tranquilino Sandalio de Noda, an admirer of the entrepreneurial and scientific spirit of the Grand Admiral Christopher Columbus.
