The shield of the city of Colombus.
The shield has an ogival shape, similar to that of the Republic of Cuba. The bundle of sugar cane, placed vertically behind the symbol, expresses that the city and the municipality are children of the sugar industry. The star at the top of the beam evokes the one existing in our national banner.
The Latin currencies mean: "Plus Ultra" recalls "the beyond" of the feat carried out by the Grand Admiral Christopher Columbus in 1492. "Nosce Te Ipsum" is the Latin version of the exergue located at the entrance to the Delphic oracle: " Know thyself ”, which alludes to the need to delve into our roots for the knowledge of Local and National History.
The Christopher Columbus Monument and a bronze bell are represented in the upper left barracks. The first, as it has been a symbol of the city since 1893, the work of the Cuban artist Miguel Melero and which is located in the center of the Parque de La Libertad. The bell represents the numerous sugar mills that existed in the territory and that made Columbus the island's sugar emporium during some decades of the 19th century.
The flower of the malangueta is conceived in the upper right barracks, a plant that existed for many years in the southwestern lagoon of the town _ the city's foundational area, arising from the extraction of stones for the construction of houses and the paving of streets .
The key to the lower barracks means that Columbus was and is for its economic, political, social and cultural development, and for its geographical location, the door to neighboring municipalities. It symbolizes the Colombian hospitality towards visitors and the cosmopolitan character of the city.
The three barracks that make up the shield have the background color: upper left (red), upper right (blue) and lower (white), which are those that have our flag. The edge of the shield, the key and the pedestal of the statue are yellow; the monument's headstone, statue, and bell are dark gray; and the taro in its natural colors green and red.
A representation of this fiber cement shield has been placed in the upper central part of the facade of the Government House, since August 2016 in honor of the 180th anniversary of the founding of the city, the work of William Alexander Aragón Marcos, Colombian artist and President of the Colón and Art Sociocultural Project.
